WHAT IS CHINESE MASSAGE?

WHAT IS CHINESE MASSAGE?       By Jone Guo, Chinese Medicine Expert, State certified therapist.

To answer this question, we need to know what Chinese medicine is, because Chinese massage is a branch of it.

Chinese Medicine, or Traditional Chinese Medicine, was created by Yellow Emperor about 5,000 years ago. And recent studies show that the use of Chinese herbs can date back to about 10,000 years.

I-Ching, or the Book of Yi Jing, was also created at the same time, which points out that everything in the universe is made of two things: Yin, and Yang. Yin is the definition for black, dark, female, night, etc, while yang is the opposite: white, bright, male, day, etc.

Almost all people know the sign of yin and yang. They must exist in perfect balance and harmony, or things will go wrong.

And this is the foundation that Chinese Medicine is based upon. We, each one of us, the body is built with yin and yang with its natural balance. And when the body is “off-balance”, which means when you have too much yin, or too much yang, you are sick.

When you have too much yin, your yang will be depressed, and you will suffer with symptoms like weak muscles, weariness,  cold hand, cold sweat, impotence, etc.

When you have too much yang, your yin will be depressed, you will suffer from hypertension, headache, hot flesh, trouble-sleeping, etc. I see many of my clients suffering from having too much yang in the body.

When your body is out of balance, there should be NO delay to receive treatment to bring the balance back to your yin and yang. Or the so called “evil energy” will go deep into your meridians and cause much serious sickness.

There are twelve meridians inside one’s body, they operate according to different time of the day, and they move in a big circulation witin 24 hours. These meridians relate to different organs, and along them, acupuncture points are stationed.

Chinese medicine consists of herbs, acupuncture, cupping and moxibustion, and massage. All of these methods target your meridians and acupuncture points. When you are sick, it means a certain part of your meridian is not working well. It is just like a stream, flowing inside your body, when it is clogged, the downstream will be short of energy supply, and upstream may have too much of it. Chinese medicine will unblock this part of the channel, so the chi, or life force, will flow freely again. Your balance of yin and yang will be back, and you are healthy again.

Massage, called “mo-sa”, in ancient China, is a great natural way to bring back people’s health. It will target your meridian channels and acupuncture points and give you ultimate healing result that no other massage can achieve. Chinese massage is natural medicine, Chinese massage is therapeutic massage. A massage therapist is a Chinese Medicine doctor in China, who has profound knowledge of meridian network and its working features, their doctrine is: “Magic hands bring back the springtime.”

Christmas Gift: Warm Your Heart With Moxibustion

Christmas is just a few days away, and Palace Herbal Spa would like to present this present for you as a heart warming experience.

Moxibustion is a cone, or a stick, made of Chinese sage to heat up the acupunture point to treat chronic diseases, and common ailments. When winter comes, especially during the wet or snow season, moxibustion is widely used by people to drive away or prevent cold or chill.

I am here to off you this very simple way to do it:

I understand that you may not be able to get moxibustion supplies here in San Diego, but you can use cone incense instead. Put the cone in the cone burner, burn the incense, put your fingers around the burning, let the heat go up to the center of your palm (Be careful, do not burn yourself). There is one primary acupunture point called lao gong--Labor Palace, on the Pericardium Channel. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, you have 5 hearts: two on your hands, two on your feet, and they are all connected. So warming your Labor Palace will warm your heart and mind, and your whole body too. When you feel chill, do this simple moxibustion for ten minutes, you will feel warm from inside out!  Please recommend to friends, a few dollars investment worth a million!

See Labor Palace Point:

Moxibustion, using cone incense:

You can choose your favorite incense. I recommend lavender if you have trouble sleeping, and rose if you are in low spirit. Sage will be the best to fight cold and chill.

Light Swedish massage is NOT for winter.

The light Swedish massage is NOT suitable for winter massage. It is good for the lungs which belong to autumn. For winter, massage should be firm and deep, since it is the season of the kidney. Kidney loves firm and deep massage because it rules the muscle and bones. According to Chinese Medicine, winter massage can help give you a stress-free and healthy body for the next spring. Experience winter massage, at your Palace.

It is the Season of the Lung

Dear Patron,

As mentioned in our previous message to you, in autumn, your lungs will dominate your health. And now, autumn is in full swing. It is time to trade frozen yogurt, smoothies for hot soups and steamed vegetables.

It is vital to use warm food to ward off the cold "evil" energy which can affect your meridian channels. Also, lungs connect to your skin, so get covered and stay warm.

We would like to provide a list of things that can balance your qi in this season:

Apples, cranberries, pears, figs, pumpkins, sweet potatoes, broccoli, squash, ginger, cinnamon.

Also, pls be advised that since the color white is for the lungs in Chinese Medicine, any produce with white color can benefit your lungs so as to bring overall health to your body.

These include: white turnip, lotus roots, pears, etc.

For how to receive autumn massage at our spa, refer to our previous message regarding "autumn massage".

Thanks!

HAPPY MID-AUTUMN FESTIVAL, SEPT 22

HAPPY MID-AUTUMN FESTIVAL, SEPT 22

Tomorrow, Sept 22, will be the Chinese Mid-autumn Festival. According to Chinese culture, on 15th of the Eight Month of the Lunar Calendar, the moon will be the fullest, and it is time for families to gather, lovers to send blessings to each other, and time to celebrate for the year’s harvest.

Moon cakes, a moon-shaped treat made with all sorts of fillings such as nuts, meat, dried fruits, is the main theme for mid-autumn. It symbolizes unity of families or companies, and harvest that is given by God (the Up Sky). To go with moon cakes, people drink laurel wine, have jasmine tea, tie guanyin( Iron Guan Yin Buddha), and Longjing(Dragon Well).

Mid-autumn is official holiday in China, it announces both the official and natural change of the season, so “how to take care of your health” in autumn is the major topic on all TVs and newspapers.

Traditional Chinese Medicine regards Mid-autumn as the turning point from yang(summer) to yin,(starting tomorrow). Drinking tea has become more favorable for people to balance yin and yang inside the human body. In the summertime, people have stored too much yang and drinking tea(yin) at mid-autumn can help bring back yin energy. Once yin and yang are balanced, you have achieved great health.

But if you have already had too much yin in your body, please avoid drinking too much tea. A few sips will be fine, and too much will affect your health. People having stomach or kidney problems should avoid tea, especially green tea or iced tea. Please note that drinks such as coffee and coke belong to yang. If your body is already loaded with yang, you must avoid drinking coffee or coke. To give you a general idea, see the following:

Food of yin: duck, fish, cucumber, lettuce, green tea, etc.

Food of Yang: beef, cheese, goat meat, garlic, onion, coffee, etc.

A lot of food is neutral, such as: pork, potato, etc.

Note: salt belongs to “fire” and it is yang. Do not eat to much salt. Beef is already yang enough, adding salt is like putting oil on fire for your body.

If you eat beef & cheese daily, you must avoid drinking too much coffee. Too much yang will bring damage to heart, liver, and kidneys. It will also cause damages to your memory and intelligence.  You will feel hot and sweaty even the room temperature is only 68 degrees (kidney deficiency). Too much yang is also the cause for hypertension.

If you cannot live without beef and cheese, then green tea is the best solution to bring back the yin in your body. Also, on Mid-autumn, the moon is full and it is the best time to absorb yin energy from it. The power of full moon will activate your channels and it is the best time to do some yoga, have some massage, or a spa.

Tomorrow is the festival, and Palace Herbal Spa would like to ask you to have a get-together for your family at our spa, and we would also like to send blessings to you all. We wish you great health and a wonderful harvest for the year of the tiger for your family and business.

Thanks for choosing Palace Herbal Spa as your “Palace”

HOW TO RECEIVE MASSAGE IN AUTUMN

HOW TO RECEIVE MASSAGE IN AUTUMN

Autumn has come. Season has changed and we, as part of nature, have changed too.

According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, when autumn comes, the dominant organ of summer, the Heart as fire, is to be replaced by the Lungs.

Lungs, as gold, dominate your health in the fall season, and this organ rules your skin and hair. So taking care of your lungs has become crucial, and at Palace Herbal Spa, we will provide services that will enhance your lungs so as to bring great therapy to your body and soul.

Since lungs rule your skin and hair, whole body massage becomes very favorable for rejuvenating and nourishing your skin from head to toe. Massaging your skin with therapeutic oil will enhance your lungs. And targeting your lung meridian and its acupuncture points will give you ultimate healing effect that no other type of massage will be able to achieve. Autumn massage is Chinese massage.

A chair massage at our spa on the bladder channels on your back, emphasizing on the lung points will also help you. And a foot reflexology with lung reflex zone as the center point will also be very beneficial.

To coordinate the services we provide, you can do the following to enhance your lungs: Find a great area with fresh air, do the “yin and yang” lung exercise.

Yang:  deep breath, about 5 minutes.

Yin: Exercise light coughs,  about 12 times.( light cough only!)

This is a Traditional Chinese Medicine exercise which will balance the yin and yang and bring great benefit to your lungs. After this, you are ready to come to our spa to have your favorite massage.

Remember: TCM prohibits hot bath with massage. So do not have Jacuzzi or hot shower before or after massage, especially in the autumn time when your lungs dominate your health. See more info on our website: www.sandiego4massage.com

Thanks so much your time!

Magic Hands: Chinese Massage for Osteoporosis

Magic Hands: Chinese Massage for Osteoporosis

Dear Patron, I believe many of you have received my booklet regarding the 12 meridians, your life channels. If you still don’t have one, please come to the counter of Palace Herbal Spa to get one, I still have some copies left.

One client recently requested about menopause and osteoporosis therapy. And I would like to take this chance to show you how and why Chinese massage can help with these problems.

According to Pacific College of Oriental Medicine, Osteoporosis, commonly referred to as brittle bones, is a syndrome leading to reduction in bone mineral density, and architecture and changes in the variety and amount of proteins in bone. The patient is at an increased risk of fracture. A hip or spine fracture would require immediate hospitalization and surgery. Spinal or vertebral fractures can result in loss of height, severe back pain and deformity.

There are various risk factors linked to the development of Osteoporosis:

-80% of cases occur in women, as they have lighter and thinner bones and lose bone rapidly post menopause.
-Age reduces bone density.
-Heredity and genetics determine if one is at risk.
-A smaller and thinner person is at a higher risk
-An adult who has broken one or more bones during their adulthood.
-There is a greater likelihood of people of Caucasian, Asian or Latino descent to develop osteoporosis as compared to Africans. -Women with low estrogen levels.
-Men with low testosterone levels. Testosterone may be low due to high alcohol intake and insufficient diet. -A diet lacking in calcium, vitamin D, phosphorous and essential vitamins.
-Too much of animal protein in the diet can lead to loss of calcium through the kidneys.
-High consumption of sodium.
-Inactive lifestyle combined with smoking and alcohol abuse increase the risk  of osteoporosis.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) centers on the balancing of energy (Qi) in each human being to achieve overall wellness. According to TCM, the loss of kidney Qi and blood stagnation are mainly responsible for osteoporosis. Kidney rules over bones, to balance the kidney is to keep the bones in good order.

Acupuncture/acupressure massage has been shown to treat Osteoporosis. When the specific points are subjected to pressure, the nerve stimulation works towards building calcitonin, the hormone responsible for recalcification of bone and reducing bone pain. Research done at the Chengdu University, Sichuan Province of
China, have proven the positive effects of acupuncture towards increase in bone metabolism.
The tried and tested ancient Chinese preparations coupled with acupuncture offer promise in treating the root causes of osteoporosis and bone disease, providing a beneficial environment to the body and enhancing bone health.

If you have menopause and osteoporosis problems, I suggest you get the following treatment at our spa:

30 min ginger foot reflexology spa, plus half hour table massage.

Ginger is one of the best Chinese herbal medicine to restore chi (life force) to the kidney( Kidney means your kidney and reproductive organs). And a reflexology concentrating on the center of the bottom of the feet (kidney zone) and the heel of the feet (reproduction area), can help with many ailments. After this foot spa, come to the table, and let the therapist massage on your back and lower back (bladder channels), and your belly( Conception Vessel, stomach channels, etc). This combination of holistic health care will give you great treatment for the menopause and osteoporosis problems.

Recommended: Drink Ginger Hot Tea after you get home from our spa. Chop some fresh ginger, boil for 15 minutes. Add honey. Taste the wonder of natural medicine.

Mother’s Day: Why Orange Is So Good?

Mother’s Day: Why Orange Is So Good?

Dear friends, Mother’s Day is coming, and I have filled my glass compote with oranges again in my Escondido and La Mesa Spas.

This time, I found some genuine Chinese oranges, those which belong to the Chinese Medicine food therapy. This type of orange not only serves as a symbol of good luck in China, but also brings health to people in many ways.

An orange a day,

Builds a healthy lady.

Chinese orange belongs to the “warm” medicine, and its properties as the “Yang”, can fight many diseases, ailments, or discomfort. Chinese Medicine believes orange is one of the best fruit to fight or prevent cancer and stroke.  And ladies love to use it since 5,000 years ago to keep their body in a healthier state.

I have one short formula of Chinese orange to fight menstrual pain:

Half pound “orange meat”, which means oranges with no peels. Cut into small pieces, and boil for 3 minutes. Put in bowl for 2 minutes, and then add honey. Serve while hot.

When you come to our spa this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, please don’t forget to get one Chinese orange at the counter!

Happy Mother’s Day to You All!
